Program
The NWW Wednesday Night Drop-In has provided a
leisure/recreational/social program for adults with developmental
disabilities for over thirty years. Drop-In is a
welcoming community-centered program that has as its goal to provide
a safe and accepting environment for participants, age 16 and over,
to socialize and enjoy themselves. Families who are caring for
an adult with developmental disabilities at home have an opportunity
for "respite care".
Advisory Board- Schedule
An Advisory Board comprised of Drop-In
participants and NWW staff meet at least twice each year to plan the
program's activities and conduct program evaluations. The
activities vary each session and are held bi-weekly, 6:30-8:30 p.m.,
from September through June at the Grace Church, 76 Eldredge Street,
Newton Corner. The facility is accessible.
Staff
Lisa Oberton, Drop-In Director, NWW staff, and
volunteers supervise each session. College and high school
students volunteer on a regular and part-time basis.
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers provide an atmosphere of inclusion
as well as encouragement and support for the participants during the
activities. Volunteers have the unique opportunity to meet
individuals with developmental disabilities who live and work in
their community. All volunteers have an orientation session
with the volunteer coordinator and other staff give volunteers
on-going support. Volunteers come from colleges, high schools
and "Coming of Age" programs at churches and temples as well as
interested citizens from Newton and surrounding communities.
Public Relations
Throughout the year brochures are sent to
participants, agencies that serve people with developmental
disabilities, and private homes to announce the various programs and
invite new participants.
Funding
Funding is provided by the NWW Committee, CDGB
grants from the City of Newton, and private donations (financial and
in-kind). Communities of Faith, the First Parish Church in
Weston and the Wellesley Congregational "Village" Church provide
holiday meals and gifts for special occasions. These funds and
donations make the program affordable for the participants, who pay
$5 per session. All donations are tax-deductible.
